Currently Sri Lanka is experiencing an economic crisis that is so severe that it triggers community demonstrations. The Sri Lankan government was forced to impose a “shoot on the spot” rule on Tuesday, May 10, 2021. The government did that a day after riots and also violence in some areas, to bring order to the masses then “shoot on the spot” was imposed.

Thousands of security forces were on standby in the curfew.

Sri Lanka’s Defense Ministry said the rule applies to anyone who loots public property or is a perpetrator of violence that causes fatalities to be shot on the spot. Police said a total of eight people were killed and more than 225 were injured in the unrest during a curfew.

Mobs attacked and set fire to vehicles carrying police in Colombo. Senior Deputy Inspector General Desabadu Tenakon was finally able to escape to the hospital after warning shots and reinforcements were dispatched. He was later discharged after treatment.

In other incidents, as a result of the riots were many vigilantes and anarchists. They blocked the main road to Colombo Airport. Demonstrators also checked and confronted any pro-Rajapaksa loyalties who tried to leave the island.

Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down from office on 09-05-2018 last year, but his setback failed to dampen public anger. Then Gotabaya Rajapaksa succeeded his brother as President of Sri Lanka. Gotabaya Rajapaksa holds power and command over the security forces. He also has the power to appoint and dismiss Ministers and Judges free from prosecution.

The protesters will continue to grow according to estimates at the crime scene, the mob vows not to leave until the President leaves. Rajapaksa’s rule has been in extreme turmoil after his country suffered months of long power outages, as well as shortages of essentials such as food and fuel as a result of Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis so far this year.

DUE TO COVID-19

Since its independence in 1948, the Covid-19 pandemic has crippled Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, therefore the Government stopped most imports to save foreign currency as a means to pay debts, which had failed to be paid before. The protests lasted peacefully for weeks. But the masses demanded the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa due to the worsening economic crisis.

Police eventually fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd.

Due to the continuing chaos, police officers imposed a curfew across the South Asian country until Wednesday 11 May 2022.
